Why their memory and communication matter for our health

    Plants can “remember”

Plants have a kind of memory. For example, sunflowers track the sun throughout the day, return to their starting position at night, and anticipate sunrise even in total darkness. Similarly, albizia tree leaves open and close in rhythm with daylight cycles, continuing their movement even when placed in a dark environment.

Certain species of seeds have been shown to “remember” the daylight conditions their parent plants experienced, which determines when they germinate. In some cases, these memory-driven adaptations last for decades, helping to ensure survival in specific environmental conditions.

    Plants as timekeepers

Beyond memory, plants also display a remarkable ability to measure time. Some seeds require specific night lengths to trigger germination, demonstrating an internal biological clock. For instance, begonia seeds will not sprout unless nighttime darkness falls below a particular threshold.

Other plants, like bamboo, seem to take timekeeping one step further. Certain varieties bloom and die in synchronization across the globe despite growing in different conditions. This finding suggests an innate, built-in calendar that spans years or even decades.

    Plants communicate through chemical signals

Perhaps the most fascinating discovery has been that plants “talk” to one another (and to other organisms) through chemical signals. When attacked by herbivores, plants release airborne compounds that act as distress signals, warning neighbouring plants to activate their defenses. Some even enlist the help of insects. When under threat, certain plants emit chemicals that attract predatory insects to eliminate their attackers.

Many plants use specific chemical compounds to attract pollinators. Some even mimic pheromones or give off scents resembling rotting meat to trick insects into visiting. Others, like the skunk cabbage, generate heat to amplify their scent and attract pollinators.

    What this means for us

Understanding plant “intelligence” can reshape the way we interact with nature. Here’s how these findings can be applied in practical ways.

Better nurturing and relating to plants

If plants are capable of memory and communication, how we care for them matters. Recognizing their ability to respond to environmental cues can help us cultivate healthier, more resilient plant life.

    Designing healthier spaces

Urban planners are increasingly implementing research that suggests green spaces improve air quality, reduce stress, and enhance well-being. They’re betting that urban environments that integrate plants with known adaptive behaviours into their designs can benefit residents in multiple ways.

    Creating therapeutic environments

The presence of plants has been shown to lower anxiety and boost mood. Understanding plant behaviour could inform how we design healing spaces, such as hospitals and therapy rooms.

As plant research continues, we may uncover even deeper insights into their cognitive-like abilities. Recognizing plants as active participants in ecosystems, not just as resources, can help us create more sustainable, healthy, and harmonious environments for both humans and plants alike.

    Biome to the rescue

These days, we’re learning that a healthy gut microbiome, one that is richer in helpful bacteria and lower in unamiable ones, is a harbinger of good health: research has shown that it improves digestive, heart, and brain health. When it comes to what we eat, the microbiome lends an assist in digesting, processing, and excreting for better overall nutritional status. In other words, consider the microbiome as an important component of detoxifying our bodies for lasting health.

Here are some ways that the most beneficial microbes that reside in our intestines can be best supported.

    Go plant crazy

As part of the American Gut Project, University of California San Diego School of Medicine researchers discovered that people who ate more than 30 different types of plant-based foods per week had a greater diversity of beneficial gut microbiota than those who ate 10 or fewer types of plant foods.

    Work up a sweat

A recent study review in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise found enough evidence to suggest that regular bouts of exercise are associated with a positive shift in gut microbial composition (higher levels of bugs that produce the beneficial compound butyrate).

    Go easy on meat

Some research suggests that a meat-heavy diet, especially at the expense of plant-based foods, can shuffle around the types of microbes thriving in the gut to favour less beneficial types.

    Shop for inulin

Inulin (a prebiotic) belongs to a class of carbohydrates called fructans, which are plant carbohydrates that, because of their unique structure, resist digestion in the upper gastrointestinal tract but are quantitatively fermented in the colon by the microorganisms that reside there. This helps the beneficial microbes flourish and produce postbiotics. You can source this prebiotic fibre from Jerusalem artichokes; chicory root; alliums, including onions, leeks, and garlic; asparagus; soybeans (which includes edamame); oats; and whole wheat.

    Manage stress

It’s thought that periods of stress can reshape the human microbiome in a way that’s less favourable to health. Measures such as going for walks and practising meditation that help downgrade stress are important.

    Try supplementation

A probiotic supplement can help optimize the microbiome, especially during periods of travel, illness, antibiotic use, or stress, when your microbiome can take a hit.

    Don’t overdo the sweet stuff

Research published in the journal iScience found that people who consumed more foods and drinks with aspartame, sucralose, saccharin, and stevia leaf extract had less diverse beneficial colonies of gut bacteria and higher concentrations of harmful toxins in their intestines when compared to those study participants who didn’t use non-nutritive sweeteners.

    Grab more shut-eye

It appears that both sleep fragmentation and short sleep duration are associated with gut dysbiosis, an imbalance in the different types of microscopic organisms living in your body. Make it a habit to practise good sleep hygiene, such as reducing bright light exposure before bedtime and keeping that phone far away from the bed.

  • Bring the outdoors in!

    Bring the outdoors in!

How introducing indoor plants can awaken your senses

As summer fades into cooler temperatures and shorter days, many people spend more time indoors. But you don’t have to lose your connection to nature. Bringing houseplants into your home can help you preserve a bit of summer and boost your well-being.

The power of plants in person

Plants can help improve your mood during seasonal transitions. Exposure to greenery, even indoors, has been shown to reduce blood pressure, heart rate, and stress hormones. Several studies confirm that having houseplants can elevate happiness and reduce symptoms of depression, especially during periods of limited outdoor activity.

Simply grouping a few plants with a nearby reading nook can create a cozy, nurturing environment. Plants provide a sense of being embraced by nature, fostering comfort and happiness inside the home.

    Caring for plants and yourself

Taking care of houseplants offers mental health benefits like increased life satisfaction and cognitive clarity. Nurturing plants requires responsibility—watering, feeding, and tending to them. Watching plants grow, produce buds, or sprout new leaves can bring feelings of achievement and joy.

Research shows that repotting and caring for plants can reduce stress and lower blood pressure, providing physical health benefits alongside mental well-being.

Ready to create your indoor garden?

Start with easy, low-maintenance plants and expand your collection as you become more comfortable. Choose placement based on space and light: vines can hang from shelves, plants can cluster in sunny windows, and orchids thrive on bright kitchen windowsills.

Select containers that match your interior style. Modern homes may benefit from sleek pots with clean lines, while varied levels of plant stands or podiums can add visual interest and depth to your indoor garden.

Indoor plants serve as a reminder that spring and summer will return. The best plants are often the ones that excite you most—bringing a bit of nature’s beauty and health benefits into your everyday life.

    DIY AROMATHERAPY CANDLE

    Ingredients:

    • 6 oz Glass Jar
    • 7.5 oz. Beeswax
    • 40-50 Drops of Essential Oils
    • 1 Wick

    Instructions:

    1. Stick the wick to the bottom of jar using a little melted wax.
    2. Hold wick up using two sticks tied together at each end, with your wick in the middle
    3. Place beeswax in a double broiler on stovetop
    4. Melt beeswax until completely dissolved
    5. Remove from stove
    6. Let cool slightly
    7. Stir in essential oils
    8. Pour into jar
    9. Let cool

*If layering the two waxes, follow the steps above but use half the amount of wax for each color. Pour the first color and let sit until set and then follow with the next color.

One thing to keep in mind when making candles with essential oils is that the fragrance is subtle. If you are looking for a stronger scent, you may want to diffuse your oils. Or better yet, a combination of the two. Who doesn’t love the beautiful scent of diffused oils while enjoying the flicker of a candle? A powerful relaxing combo indeed!

Feel free to make it your own combinations and make sure to have some fun!

    DIY Honey Bath

    Ingredients:

    • 1 Tablespoon Honey
    • 3 Drops of Pranarom Essential Oil
    • ¼-1 Cup of Pranarom Hydrosol

    Instructions:

    1. Add honey to a jar, add the essential oil and mix well. Then add hydrosol and mix until the honey has dissolved. Pour directly into your bath water.

Honey is a humectant, giving this combination a moisturizing effect. It also works as a dispersant for the essential oils (which is furthered by mixing with the hydrosol) so that it seamlessly integrates with the bath water.

This will make your skin feel SO soft and luxurious!

    DIY Essential Oil Clay Diffuser

    Ingredients:

    • Airdry clay (they used Terracotta for an organic feel)
    • Hemp Cording
    • Wooden Beads (wide hole)
    • Essential Oil (like Pranarom Zen diffusion blend)
    • Rubber Stamp (or household items to make patterns)
    • Circle Cutter
    • Drinking Straw or Large Skewer (to make hole)
    • Rolling Pin

    Instructions:

    1. Roll out clay into a slab about ¼” thick. Stamp design into clay.
    2. Cut out clay into circles and make hole at the top using a straw or skewer.
    3. Set aside to dry for 24-48 hours, until fully hardened. Flip pieces occasionally to dry both sides.
    4. Once dry, cut a piece of hemp cord approximately 18 inches and thread through hole.
    5. Add beads and tie a knot at the top of your last bead.
    6. Add an additional knot at the end of the two pieces of cord.
    7. Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil and enjoy the beautiful aroma.

You can make these as elaborate as you want. Add some metal embellishments, join a couple shapes together, etc. This diffuser can be hung in a car, closet, or anywhere you want to aromatize your space.
