the LUCKY SHAKE is BACK and still Better Than Ever

You told us and we listened: our Lucky Shake was our most popular monthly special smoothie of 2017, and so we’re bring it back again for the month of March 2018.
Last year, we caught on to the hype surrounding a popular fast food chain’s seasonal ‘milkshake’. Everyone was talking about this tasty beverage, so we wanted to see what it was all about. What we discovered was unsettling to say the least…
With ingredients like “whipping propellant”, “sodium benzoate”, “yellow 5”, and “blue 1”, we wondered how this drink was able to be sold as actual “food”. In fact, other than milk, sugar, cream, and water, the laundry list of ingredients includes nothing recognizable as edible. Furthermore, a medium one of these shockingly electric green liquids in a cup would cost you half of your day’s healthy allowance of saturated fat, zero grams of fiber, and a whopping 84 grams of sugar – which is more than a healthy adult should consume in two days‘ time. If you don’t believe us, check out the stats on this below, which we’ve pulled directly from this fast food chain’s website:
We’re all about celebration and treating yourself, but at Basil Bandwagon Natural Market, we believe this should involve doing so with kindness and nourishment to your body and mind. That’s why we created the Lucky Shake to give you this option. Our shake includes whole foods, fruits, vegetables, and plenty of fiber and protein. With ingredients like bananas, almond milk, cacao nibs, mint, plant-based protein powder, and spirulina (a nourishing seaweed extract), this is a treat you can enjoy comfortably while treating your body with care.
Stop by and grab one today before March is over!
  • Nourish 2018

    Nourish 2018

Every year, we strive to make a change in our lives and ourselves. This is often things that will improve our lives, like exercise, diet, or getting more sleep. Maybe you are looking to start painting again, or traveling more- all these things are a part of what you hope will eventually give you the life you dream of.

These notions are statistically known to fail. Only 8% of people will stick to their plan- the rest of us try to pretend we never said anything.

So, should we NOT strive to make goals for ourselves in the new year?

Perhaps there’s an idea out there thats broader, and more likely to bring success.

    NOURISH yourself this year.

Instead of resolutions, goals or challenges- how about an outlook that will feed your entire life? This is where the word “nourish” comes in.

Here’s 3 ways to Nourish yourself this year:

    #1 Feed Your Body

Instead of simply forcing yourself to choose salads and cutting out cupcakes, look to increase the nutrition of every single thing you eat.

Nutrient dense choices aren’t always the easiest foods to grab, but they are out there. Here’s some easy swaps:

    • Spaghetti Squash instead of Pasta

    • Mashed Avocado in stead of mayo on a sandwich

    • Kombucha instead of Soda

    • Cauliflower in place of potatoes.

Check out this months Featured Smoothie, aptly named “Nourish Smoothie”– featuring a superfood ingredient that takes this simple, fresh smoothie to another nutritional level.

Also, take advantage of this month’s supplement sale! See our favorites here.

    #2 Feed Your Mind

Look at your life and find places where you can engage that amazing brain of yours. Seek out new skills and subjects: browse bookstores, sign up for e-classes and step out there. Your brain needs exercise as much as your body, and getting your mind flexible will give your whole world to expand.

    #3 Feed Your Spirit

Carve out time to connect with something spiritual. This can mean anything from meditation, to mass, to a long walk along the ocean. Write down your thoughts, light some incense- make it feel spiritual even if you don’t know how. This kind of practice can go a long way and help cement all the good you are doing in the rest of your life.

We thought about Pumpkin Spice. We thought about Apple Pie. But what if we blended all the flavors of fall together into one nutrient-rich smoothie?

That’s our Fall Glory Smoothie. Apple Cider, Maple Pumpkin Butter, Organic Pumpkin Puree, Rolled Oats, Vanilla Plant Protein and Coconut Milk combine in this comforting October smoothie.

    Welcome Fall!

  • Try our Fruit Moon Smoothie!

    Try our Fruit Moon Smoothie!

Vines and trees are heavy with fruit, and the light is changing. Fall is creeping up, but summer isn’t over yet. It always leaves us with the gift of rich, ripe fruit. It’s inspired us to celebrate the beauty of the harvest.

Our smoothie this month features a seasonal favorite: Cantaloupe. We were inspired to create something sweet and hydrating and at its peak flavor right now. Cantaloupe is full of potassium, vitamin C, beta carotene, and more.

We paired it with Peach, another seasonal favorite and added Mango for a smooth texture and sweetness. Almond milk adds protein, and a pinch of cardamom ties all the flavors together. Next we round it out with Zach & Zoe Lavender Honey to elevate all the flavors.

We didn’t stop at flavor: we added nutrient dense collagen. Great Lakes Collagen Hydrolysate is 90% protein, is fantastic for gut health and helps build strong hair, skin and nails.

  • Meet May’s Featured Drink: Sunshine Smoothie

Spring is in full swing and summer is on the horizon. Everyone is looking forward to warm evenings and days full of fun. What better way to celebrate this glorious anticipation than with something sunny and sweet?

    Meet our Sunshine Smoothie:

We blended frosty chunks of mango with cool coconut milk, added tangy orange juice and a few creamy bananas to round it out. A scoop of turmeric adds not only a boost of inflammatory goodness, but it gives this smoothie its bright orange hue!

  • A Lucky Shake for St. Patrick’s Day! (Hold the Polysorbate 80, Please!)

A Lucky Shake for St. Patrick’s Day! (Hold the Polysorbate 80, Please!)

It’s time for me to fess-up a bit here.

I work in a health food store but haven’t always eaten healthy. When I was a kid, I used to look forward to seasonal holiday treats from fast food chains. My all-time favorite was when March would roll around. My mom would take my brother and I to our favorite fast food place for a St. Patrick’s Day-inspired shake we’d order off their seasonal menu. This was so cool because the shake was a lovely shade of bright green and tasted like sweet minty goodness.

I carried this tradition into my teenage years with my friends and then into early adulthood. That is, until I woke up to how the food I was eating was effecting my health. Let me shed a little light on exactly what is in this green cup of “goodness”.  According to the nutritional facts for the shake listed on the company’s website, the shake includes the following ingredients:

Phew… still with me? That is an awfully long list that leaves me with a few questions: Why is it called whipped “topping” and not whipped cream? And why does the cherry have a list of ingredients- isn’t it just a cherry? Also, do green sugar crystals grow out of the ground? Might I add that there isn’t actually any mint in this minty-tasting beverage?

As if this wasn’t enough information to scare you away, check out the nutritional facts associated with a small and large shake:

That’s why we created the Lucky Mint Chip Shake – available at both of our locations for a limited time. Our shake uses none of the above and is actually healthy and naturally energizing and detoxifying. Here’s OUR ingredients: At Basil Bandwagon, we think everyone should be able to enjoy a holiday treat without having to dowse themselves in artificial colorings, flavorings and 3 days-worth of sugar in one glass.

    Organic Spinach

    Spirulina

    Organic Mint Leaves/Extract
