  • Memorial Day: Remembering Together

    Memorial Day: Remembering Together

Most of us know Memorial Day weekend as a time to ‘kick off’ the unofficial start to summer with barbecues, beach days, bike rides, and boat rides.  We celebrate with lots of food, fun, and festivities. But what is Memorial Day? Do we know what we are actually celebrating?

Many people are easily confused by the holidays we have in the U.S. honoring military service members. So let’s take a moment to break those down here:

    • There’s a day for those who have served = Veterans Day
    • There’s a day for those who are currently serving = Armed Forces Day
    • And there’s a day for those who died in service = Memorial Day

Take a moment now to share this with a friend or loved one. Let’s remind ourselves why we have this ‘extra day off’ this weekend.  It’s a time for us to remember the many freedoms we enjoy because of a brave few who dedicated their lives to our country and who died too soon from wounds seen and unseen.

This is an opportunity to reflect on gratitude – that word and concept that is so important when it comes to wellbeing. Memorial Day demonstrates how we as a nation honor the people who pledged their lives to protect us.  With this in mind, remember not just the lost heroes, but also the families they left behind. Parents, grandparents spouses, fiancés, children, siblings, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and entire family units have been permanently changed by a knock on the door. For these many folks, this holiday – and every other – presents an absence of a precious loved one and a reminder of their hero’s legacy.

In the name of gratitude and wellbeing for all, let’s toast to this Memorial Day with tribute, pride, and festivity for the families of the fallen and the legacies of our fallen heroes.

    Cheers.

Celebrating 25 Years of Nourishing Hunterdon County

We’ve been talking about our Anniversary as a business for about 6 weeks now and we’re still so darn excited about it that we just can’t stop!

Though our EarthFest celebration has come and gone, along with our social media road tour among some of our favorite vendors, we’re taking one last opportunity to share the goodness that we enjoyed. Check out this quick video that highlights some of our favorite moments.

  • Love Food, Hate Waste!

In honor of Earth Week, our 25th Anniversary, and EarthFest right around the corner, we’d like to share a dozen ways we help reduce waste (just giving ourselves a little pat on the back since we’re proud of our efforts!):

    reusable canvas bag

Reuse those bags! We offer a discount for use of your own bags for carrying away your groceries. But don’t stop there – skip the plastic bags in the produce aisle and opt for reusable bags for your apples, brussels sprouts, lettuce, and all the rest! We sell reusable mesh bags that are perfect for produce.

    bulk bins flemington

Buy in bulk: You can choose to put your bulk beans, snacks, and other goodies straight into containers you bring from home. Just ask one of our cashiers to weigh your container before you fill it. Mason jars and other leftover jars are great for this.

Buy only what you need: Speaking of bulk, buying just what you need means you’re less likely to have to throw away food down the line! We sell bulk medicinal herbs, spices, grains, beans, trail mixes, dried fruit and granola to name just a few.

    bathroom stall doors Flemington

Support recycled goods: Have you noticed the bathroom stalls in our Flemington location? They’re made out of milk bottles and lids, giving them a cool rainbowed-confetti look! We’ve incorporated reused material throughout the stores, diverting waste from landfill and making good use of it.

Buy in recycled bottles: We sell Eagles Peak Water. This company picks up, sanitizes, and reuses their glass bottles. When you purchase, you pay a $2 deposit for the bottle and get that refunded to you upon your bottle return to our store. The convenience of bottled water without the waste!

    Hyroflask

Use your own cup ‘o joe: Bring in your own cup for your coffee, smoothie or juice and our cafe crew will happily serve you your favorite refreshment to go. If you don’t have one yet, we recommend our Hydroflask double walled coffee containers for that java on the go experience.

    biodegradable compostable bags

Shop with better bags: If you forgot your bags today, don’t worry. Our new plastic bags are fully compostable.

    terracycle

Recycle your product packaging: Check out our Terracycle collection boxes. This innovative local business is finding recycling methods and uses for trash that isn’t widely recycled (check out the photos of bags made from some of our favorite product boxes!). Bring us your trash to be made into treasure! Find out more at www.terracycle.com

Buy recycled: We offer a great range of recycled paper products. Try the coffee filters, then add them to your own compost right along with the leftover grounds.

Compost: Starting your own compost pile at home is another great way to cut down on waste- plus it makes for nutrient rich dirt for your plants!  All our Farm to Market Café scraps are composted, and unsaleable produce is collected by Woodlands Wildlife Refuge for their resident critters to enjoy.

Ditch disposable lunch and snack bags: Single-serving packs and plastic bags can be handy when brown bagging lunch or snacks, but they create more waste than you need. We have metal, glass, and silicone lunch container options. Check out our reusable bamboo cutlery too!

Sip through stainless steel straws: We sell stainless steel straws which are a great reusable plastic-free option. One of our next big projects is reducing plastic straw waste from our cafe.

We welcome your feedback on how we can help cut down our waste and help make it easier for you to do the same at home! Leave us a comment below or write to us 🙂

  • 10 Quick & Easy Ways to Reduce the Carbon Footprint in your Kitchen

10 Quick & Easy Ways to Reduce the Carbon Footprint in your Kitchen

    1. Make Your Own Bulk Fermented Food.

Cultures for Health and Basil Bandwagon

Yogurt, sourdough bread, kefir, kombucha… these are all delicious, healthy foods that can be beneficial for your gut health. Unfortunately, if you are purchasing them on the regular, you’re disposing of a lot of packaging. While much of it is recyclable, an even better option would be to avoid the packaging all-together by making your own batches in home and storing them in your own glass reusable containers. Check out our Cultures for Health starter cultures, available in our refrigerated section.

    2. Use your favorite hot/cold beverage bottle.

    Hydroflask and Basil Bandwagon

We <3 Hydroflask. Their bottles can hold hot or cold beverages, making them perfect for year-round enjoyment of iced tea, water, hot tea, or coffee – whatever fits your fancy. Plus they come it your favorite color, whatever that may be.

    3. Stash the kids’ snacks in stainless.

    Kid Basix and Basil Bandwagon

Safesnacker made by KidBasix is BPA and phthalate free and the perfect size for a portion of fruit, veggies, or homemade granola. They’re easy to open and close, and are a mess-proof way of tossing in lunchboxes or backpacks.

    4. Stop buying plastic wrap.

    Bee's Wrap and Basil Bandwagon

Reuseable food wraps like BeesWrap is not only functional, but beautiful as well. Pretty patterned cloth made in Vermont with beeswax, organic cloth, tree resin, and jojoba oil is great for wrapping cheese, lemons, greens, or covering plates or bowls of food.

    5. Buy high efficiency laundry detergent.

A 64 fluid ounce bottle of Biokleen can clean up to 128 loads of laundry. It’s tough on dirt, but gentle on the earth. Less packaging for more uses of product = improved sustainability.  Recycle the container when you’re done, or use it as a watering can for your plants! The built-in spout makes it perfect for this use.

    6. Ditch fabric softener sheets.

    Woolzies and Basil Bandwagon

Woolzies dryer balls made from 100% pure New Zealand wool are hypoallergenic and provide a 100% natural source of reusable fabric softener. They claim to reduce drying time by 25% and last for up to 1,000 loads!

    7. Start a compost bin.

Worried about the stink? Purchasing or making an appropriate bin with a Classic Kitchen Basics charcoal filter can eliminate smells that might prevent you from doing this sustainable practice, which reduces your waste and feeds your garden!

    8. Buy bulk herbs, snacks, powders and grains.

Buying in bulk from our amazing selection of Frontier Coop goods eliminates the need for excessive packaging AND saves you money. Win/win! Did you know? At Basil Bandwagon, you can purchase bulk items with your own reusable containers? Our cashiers will deduct the weight of your container from your purchase.

    9. Use compostable coffee filters and sandwich baggies.

We realize that some disposable items make life easier. What you can do to reduce your footprint is to purchase from sustainable companies focused on creating compostable, natural products like these from If You Care.

    10. Use your own bags!

Forget ‘paper or plastic’: use re-useable! We know how easy it can be to forget these bags during your shopping trips – so leave a handful in your car, and keep one handy in your purse.

  • Introducing: The Basil Bandwagon Smoothie!

    Introducing: The Basil Bandwagon Smoothie!

This month, we’re celebrating 25 year in business! We couldn’t pass up the opportunity to name this month’s special smoothie after our own brand, Basil Bandwagon. We took it a step further and decided to incorporate basil as an ingredient because it’s just that delicious. This favorite herb of ours that inspired our store name is both versatile and refreshing. It can be incorporated into savory or sweet dishes and treats. In this case, we’ve partnered it with creamy almond milk, a dash of ceylon cinnamon, a small spoonful of Vermont maple syrup, creamy bananas, and sweet mango. The end result is a refreshing cup of celebratory Spring that your belly will simply love. Come and get one while they’re available this month and celebrate our 25th Anniversary with us!

  • Whole 30: The Reset You Might Need

Whole 30: The Reset You Might Need

This blog post chronicles the experience of one of our brave produce team members, Cheryl, who recently experimented with the Whole30 diet.

    * * *

Make sure your food is truly nourishing you.

Being constantly inside during the winter can encourage poor habits, such as sedentary behavior and unhealthy food choices. Sometimes even when we think we are making good choices, our bodies still don’t feel well due to food sensitivities.  Foods that are labeled as nutritious, such as “whole grain,” “calcium-rich” or “vegan” may be causes for bloating, headaches, brain fog, low mood, aches, pains and a plethora of other symptoms.

This is where eliminating these culprits is a great way to start off the spring. With this in mind, a guide to help you do this is essential. One method available that I recently used is the Whole30 plan, named for its thirty day span and menu of unprocessed whole foods.

This plan really needs preparation, but in spite of that, I did it spur of the moment. I woke up one morning, tired of feeling bad after years of feeling tired, foggy, bloated, having periodic headaches and trouble sleeping. I stopped eating questionable foods that day and had the good fortune to work in place that sells healthy food and the Whole30 book. The plan’s goal is to create a healthy relationship with food, boost sluggish metabolism, improve the digestive system, boost immunity and eliminate chronic inflammation, thereby eliminating numerous conditions.

My diet generally consists of organic foods, not a lot of refined sugar and all of the food groups–It’s no accident that I work in a health food store. The Whole30 requires that for thirty days you eliminate sugar, alcohol, grains, dairy and legumes. This includes peanuts. Which means peanut butter. Which would have been the deal breaker, if I wasn’t feeling so bad.

The book has all of the information necessary and also gives you a day-by-day idea of symptoms may occur as you go through the month. I suffered many of these things and the knowledge made it a little more bearable. Even after three days I was fatigued and headachy from withdrawal–but not bloated. After that, there was no turning back.

I don’t miss many of the things and the simple fact that I don’t want to feel that way again has made me resist the foods that make me unwell. I’ve been off the Whole30 for a few weeks now and feel much better overall. I was sure the moment I was done I would jump into a vat of peanut butter, but nope–I wanted rice. Just rice. With pepper. It was marvelous.

So, give it a go. Start off Spring by eliminating food sensitivities and allowing the food you eat to do its job and nourish you! If you have any questions about the Whole30 or my experience, you can find me in the Flemington store produce aisle 🙂

Cheryl shared this amazing chicken recipe to help you find success like she did!

    Cheryl & John’s  Whole30 Approved Chicken

    9 chicken thighs

1 lb Niman All Natural Italian sausage links

    2 red peppers

    2 green peppers

    4 potatoes, quartered

8 oz. mushrooms (baby ‘bella or button)

    1 large onion

    1/2 head Garlic

1 large can Muir Glen fire roasted tomatoes

    2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar

    Parsley

    Oregano

    Basil

    Black pepper

    Frontier Poultry Seasoning

    1/2 cup white wine (optional)

    Preheat the oven to 350.

Chop the peppers, onions, mushrooms and Garlic and add to a large roasting pan. Add the quartered potatoes, tomatoes, vinegar and wine (if using). Season to taste with the herbs and stir to combine. Nestle the sausage in the mixture. Season the chicken with poultry seasoning and arrange on top of the pan. Bake uncovered for 45 minutes to an hour. Serve.
